Nature in Blue

I’m inspired by the forms of traditional quilt blocks, typically considered a craft and not a fine art, and using those forms as a way to create an abstract image separate from a usable quilt. I spend a lot of time outside looking at nature and seeing patterns in the leaves and the flowers. I started collecting these pieces of nature and using them to make cyanotypes on fabric, creating my own patterned fabric. I then cut up this fabric and sew the pieces back together in a series of small, quilt-like objects. In this way I explore the shapes of nature vs. the shapes of the handmade and how they juxtapose to create an entirely new and abstract pattern.
