Handmade Books (2014–2015)

Ever since childhood I’ve had a fascination with making books by hand. In college I found that many of my photography series felt right being presented in a book format and I added a book arts studio concentration to my degree. I learned the history of book making, best practices for book structures, and different book binding techniques. Below is my portfolio of some of my favorite books I’ve made.

Accordion Book

One of the more unique books in the portfolio, the accordion book has clear pocket edges filled with scraps of fabric from Vulture Gear.

Vulture Gear Folder and Postcard Holder

Based on a wallet folding technique, but up-sized into a folder that can hold 8.5" x 11" paper and a folder to hold postcards. Printed on double sided matte paper.

Collaboration Drum Bound Book

Made in Book Arts class in collaboration with my classmates. Each person contributed a two page spread that was then drum bound by gluing each page together.

Vulture Gear Product Book

One of the first Vulture Gear works, made as a catalogue with product photos and description. The book is a cased in binding with a cotton twill fabric cover. Pages are printed on double sided matte paper and hand sewn together.

Sketchbook

The inspiration behind the Vulture Gear sketchbooks, conceived of and made on a whim. The book is a supported structure with book straps with a french link stitch.
